How TO PREPARE FOR LEGAL REASONING FOR CLAT 2022
This is believed to be an easy section as once you know the basics and practice enough number of questions you will be sorted. However, the major problem comes in when one has to eliminate two options. This blog will discuss the sources and how to tackle the elimination problem in detail.
1. SOURCES- For basics you can start with IPleaders. Although written by undergraduate law students (might have some mistakes), it is an excellent source for easily understanding the relevant topic at hand. It is very comprehensively written making sure that reading one long blog would be sufficient to grasp the basics. Also, it is freely accessible on Google making it a bonus point. Youtube videos can also be helpful for students who need a virtual teacher for an explanation.
2. SOLVING QUESTIONS- Once your basics on Torts, Contracts, Family Law, Constitutional Law, IPC, and bits about international law and property law (list not exhaustive) are clear you can then go on to start solving sectional tests. The problem faced by most students is how to eliminate options. I will try to bring a list of things that might be important and that you should keep in mind while solving these questions.
a. The answer options that use extreme words like 'will', 'should', or 'never' and if the same is not used in the passage then it can be eliminated easily.
b. Give importance to the question that is been asked. For example: whether is it a 'how' or 'why' or a 'what' question and whether that is in any way relevant to the options. In most cases, the options are legally correct but it is not a relevant answer to the question that is asked.
c. When confused between two options, focus more on the reasoning of the answer. Look whether that reasoning is mentioned in the passage, if a new concept is mentioned in the option which is not in the passage then in most cases you can simply eliminate it.
d. Whether you wish to read the passage first and then solve the questions or vice versa, is completely dependent on how you see this. This comes as an individual choice as to how easily can you solve questions.
3. LEGAL CURRENT AFFAIRS- This is a very important topic for preparation but most of the students skip it while preparing. The passages asked by Consortium base themselves on the contemporary context and add a bit of static legal knowledge to it. If one does not know the current context, it becomes very hard to solve the questions. It is for this reason that one should read LiveLaw or Bar & Bench parallelly so that you can keep track of the important legal developments and make apparent links.
4. IDEAL TIME AND MARKS
Time- 35-40 minutes (approx. 5 minutes to a passage)
Marks- 30+
Total questions- 40
