HOW TO PREPARE FOR ENGLISH LANGUAGE FOR CLAT 2022

A good hold over the English language forms the basis for cracking the CLAT examination and also helps in solving other sections like Logical Reasoning and Legal Reasoning. Once you understand and analyse the text properly, then you can easily solve questions by using the elimination technique or simply looking for answers directly in the text. This blog will break this section for you to understand the preparation strategy.

As you begin preparation, the most important thing is to understand easy passages that would help you to have a good grasp over reading by increasing your speed, and then one can shift to tough sources that are intellectually challenging.

1. SOURCES FOR VOCABULARY-

The best source for Vocabulary is Word Power Made Easy. The first part of the book helps one to understand the etymology of the words and the latter part comes as a detailed dictionary (with a lot of sentences and detailed meanings) that is better than other ordinary dictionaries. Also, if you want to find meaning for a word, prefer to use Merriam-Webster (an online dictionary/ free application that you can find on the Play Store) instead of Google as it gives a comprehensive meaning of the word that you search for.  Moreover, to fasten this process you can use a notebook to make a list of 10 new words (along with the synonyms) each day, revise them, and you will realize that within a short period of time you can understand the text easily.

2. NEWSPAPER READING-

Newspaper reading is fundamental not just for Current Affairs but also for English. At times, the editorial pieces of a newspaper are directly picked by the Consortium to be asked in the examination. My preferred newspaper is The Hindu as it is both intellectually challenging and has well-argued pieces. However, for beginners, a transition from Indian Express to The Hindu would be better.

3. SOLVING QUESTIONS-

For the questions to be solved in a practice test or a mock there are a few things that must be kept in mind-

a. Reading the passage is quintessential for you to solve the questions especially when you have just started preparation.

b. All questions do not have the same difficulty level. Hence, some of the questions can be directly solved on the first reading of the passage whereas for the others you might need to read a particular part of the passage again.

c. If you cannot find a direct answer to a question use the elimination method to eliminate the options that are sure shot wrong. For example- If the passage does not have extreme words, refrain from using the same in the options.

d. Questions based on vocabulary are usually contextually based and might not be always dictionary-based word meaning. One thing to keep in mind is that it is not practically possible for any man on earth to remember the meanings of all the words. Hence contextually understanding the meaning of the word with respect to the way it is used becomes important. In case you do not have time to read the passage quickly search the word and read lines before and after that line to solve the question. Grammatical questions like fill in the blanks based on tenses can be solved without even reading the passage.
